Since 2018, most people haven’t been eligible for this deduction, but there’s an important exception: if you’re active duty and moving due to a military order and permanent change of station (PCS), any unreimbursed moving expenses are still deductible!
That means if the military didn’t fully reimburse you for your move, you can write off things like:
1️⃣Packing & shipping household goods
2️⃣Travel and lodging (excluding meals)
3️⃣ Storage costs (within certain timeframes)
✅Tips for taking this deduction:
• Track the dates of your move, and keep copies of your PCS orders
• Keep detailed receipts and mileage logs during the move
• If you received partial reimbursement from the military, only deduct the portion you personally paid.
• And make sure to claim the deduction using Form 3903—it’s the one designed specifically for this
